NAME: Castiel
CANON: Supernatural
AGE: Upwards of 400 million years
CANON POINT: End of 15x13
HISTORY: Wiki
PERSONALITY: Before Castiel was anything to the Winchester brothers, before humans even stepped onto the land from the ocean, Castiel was made to be a soldier, to follow orders obediently, without question. This was Cas’s highest purpose, to be a servant and protector of the Earth and humanity in his Father’s name. Well, that didn’t quite work out, but shoot for the moon and you land in the stars? While he goes through some pretty drastic changes that alter Cas down to his core, this remains true about him - Cas is a soldier and protector first, just, not for God or Heaven anymore. As a soldier, he feels a strong need to be useful, and the sense of being a burden when he loses that use (and he’s lost it a few times now) is crippling to him. The focus of his driving purpose has shifted away from the rhetoric of Heaven and come to revolve more around humanity itself, and Castiel’s feelings around this task of caring for (and participating in) creation have expanded. He’s gained autonomy through the last several years, and that new perspective has given depth and detail to his drive in protecting human life.
Castiel started his journey through the story with “what is so worth saving, I see nothing but pain here”, and came to a place 10 seasons later where he’s arguably the heart of the show. Angels were created without the capacity for human emotion (supposedly), and after the long path of character growth Castiel’s had over the years, that involved taking Sam’s pain from his torture in Hell, Cas can often be more empathetic than Dean. His love for humanity (and for the Winchesters) often comes into conflict with his loyalty to his people, making him an enemy of Heaven for most of the series, and as regularly as we see Castiel pursue a problem with logic and intent, many of the biggest decisions he makes are driven from a place of emotion, often choosing it over self-preservation. With his first entry to the show, Castiel comes along with the concept of faith, his arcs exploring the aspects and virtues of it. While Cas’ faith in God diminished over the years (especially once he, you know, meets the dude), it’s been replaced with his faith in the good of humanity and in the brothers. Cas challenges and inspects the idea of faith, discussing it with Dean, other angels, and strangers when he’s human. Despite how stiff and detached Cas often seems, there’s a depth of spirituality and philosophy to him that’s always seeking better understanding. Occasionally, Cas may be the only one being the optimism cheerleader, even if that amounts to “I’m going to go find God to fix everything and it’s going to be great”, hey, at least he’s trying, okay?
Once Castiel’s made up his mind about something, he’ll drive towards it relentlessly, committed to that course, sometimes to the point he’ll ignore better advice from Dean and Sam, if he believes his actions are necessary enough (ie consuming the souls from Purgatory). While Castiel does, liiiike 8 times out of 10, tend to be practical, patient, and thoughtful when it comes to action, at times of high stakes and emotion, he can be extremely reckless and self-sacrificing, occasionally making a situation worse rather than better. Most of those mistakes you can add onto the Lessons Learned pile for him. Speaking of -
Cas has completely lost himself, been scraped down to his bare bones, dismantled and put back together by his brothers and sisters, gained everything and lost everything, and been left to rebuild from the basics of himself. He’s made catastrophic mistake after catastrophic mistake and had to return to the world to face the consequences of each. Learning from his mistakes has been one of the hardest but most valuable things for Castiel to go through, and it’s taught him humility, where he was once more prone to pride and arrogance, he’s been knocked down pretty damn hard by the time we hit season 15. He’s been the lowest he can be, bent on suicidal kinds of penance, refusing even Dean attempting to save him from it, and he’s had to struggle his way back from that, to a place of hope, commitment and drive again. In the early days of the show, Cas had a naive streak to him (and still somewhat does, to a lesser degree), and found himself easily manipulated, to devastating ends, not just once. It’s taught him to be more wary, not just with strangers looking to make a deal but towards his own brothers and sisters.
Angels are tools, gears in the machine that is the Host of Heaven, and though Castiel’s grown far beyond the dutiful soldier, the basics of that remain. Approaching a problem, Cas is typically pragmatic, logical, and serious, which happens to be a package deal with ‘detached and cold’, the dull monotone of his voice not helping much. ‘Doing what has to be done’ has been a theme around Castiel (and gotten him in trouble a couple times), and his commitment can be misplaced, but he’s never lacking in determination and devotion either to the cause or his comrades. Despite his origins and what he was created to be, Cas is deeply loyal, and fiercely determined once he’s set his mind to something. It’s some of the best qualities of humanity, like this, that he’s managed to emulate.
Castiel spent some time as a human, a handful of months, but the man’s over 400 million years old, so a handful of months far from makes him an expert. Still, it should say something about the experience that he's had the most emotional, intellectual, and moral growth in the last decade and change with humanity than he has in the 389+ million years before. Cas has essentially learned humanity mostly from the Winchester brothers, though not exclusively. When trying to learn how to be human, Cas watches the others around them and imitates what he sees, which is how he learns to be so extremely self-sacrificial so quickly, thanks Winchesters. He admires humanity for the strength of their emotions - their joy, their love, and their pain. Their drive, hope, and resilience. He claims that he didn’t truly understand the depth of humanity until he took Sam’s pain from the cage (causing him to lose his mind for a time). “It’s just very human, it’s a compliment”, he tells Hannah, and states things like “that’s what humans do, they say they’re fine”, which, while accurate for many humans, is especially accurate for Dean Winchester.
Team Free Will, that’s what they’ve been termed, and though Castiel has had a difficult time adjusting to and coming to terms with the reality of free will, it’s one of his highest values. Castiel’s had a complicated relationship the concept, at first so excited to share the good news of Free Will and Agency to his brothers and sisters, and then, after seeing the pain, fear, and conflict that came from the angel’s inability to self-determine, his tune changed to - “free will is a length of rope, God wants you to hang yourself with it”. Thus began Castiel’s long road of Learning How To Human, though he does seem a bit predisposed to it. He still considers it the highest goal to strive for, even if responsibility for yourself is terrifying, and horrible, unforeseen consequences can come from it, and you can never know for sure if what you’re doing is the Right Thing, but he sees great value in making those choices for yourself.
Throughout his existence, Castiel’s had a tendency towards defiance, Naomi once telling him that they’ve had to “reprogram” him over and over through the years. He’s referred to as broken, something defective in his making to act so much against his nature. Perhaps it’s true, maybe he came off the angel assembly line with a screw missing, but regardless, Castiel believes it is. Amara tells him “you reek of fear and self-loathing, you are expendable, you are weak, why God took an interest in you I’ll never understand”, and the Empty asks him in the afterlife “wouldn’t you rather be a fond memory than a constant, festering disappointment?” Guilt, fear, and self-loathing paint every wall inside Castiel’s head, and he’s been low enough that he’s been suicidal, that he’s trapped himself in a monster world on purpose, that he’s tried to become a half-batshit pacifist that follows bees around all day. After all of that, he still had his failures there to face, and the losses they caused to mourn, and a life still left to live. Castiel is evasive about his personal pain, and even if he can be the more emotionally competent of him and Dean, 1, that’s not a very high bar and 2, Cas, like Sam and Dean always do, likes to say “they don’t need to be worried about me” and move on. Because he’s a fool. They’re all fools.
There’s a balance to be found in Castiel, because while he’s a very situationally funny character, he’s rarely trying for humor. His countenance is typically much more serious than light, and it’s largely the Winchesters that get him to relax some and attempt at joking (badly) with them. Keep in mind that this is season 15 Castiel, a Cas that’s spent the last 11 years living and dying alongside the Winchester brothers and experiencing every depth of humanity. He still talks like an encyclopedia, but a very casual encyclopedia, one that uses contractions and says “yeah”. Cas is chiefly concerned with being efficient, but he has patience for miles, so while his friends are being chuckle-fucks, Cas can be seen letting out long-suffering sighs and rolling his eyes, even sometimes gets sassy with it (‘I’m an angel, you ass’, ‘Would you just stop being so stupid’, ‘I found a liquor store, and I drank it’, making jokes at Lucifer’s expense while imprisoned in Hell). He can be particular, sometimes completely missing a joke for the sake of correcting one part of it (‘he’s not my friend’, ‘oh we are not twinsies’, ‘i don’t have a harp’). While he’s gotten much better at noticing and understanding sarcasm, rbrn that can still go over his head on occasion, as Castiel tends to take things more literally than they’re meant.
While Castiel’s a lot better than he was, some jokes can still sail straight over his head, and he’s very bad at making them himself. Sarcasm, however, he’s established a much better handle on. Crowley tells him “smooth was never your strong suit”, and he’s not wrong. Cas might not be fumbling over himself at all times, but he’s always been a physically stiff character, and awkward in conversation outside of the Winchesters, not to mention, social grace isn’t usually the highest item on his priority list.
SPECIES: Angel in a human vessel, so he'll just be human vessel now.
APPEARANCE: Pic
SKILLS:
∘ Combat (Hand to hand + weapons); Castiel isn't nearly as strong or fast as he is when an Angel, but he does still have the mechanical knowledge and familiarity with combat, something he's been training all his life. Still, he's awkward transferring it over to a human body, without those usual boosts, and can make mistakes in trying to adjust.
∘ Survival; Surviving Purgatory is no easy feat, least of all surviving it alone and hunted. Granted, Cas didn't need to feed himself before, but he's spent time homeless while human before as well. Basic survival won't be too much of a challenge for him.
∘ Hunting/Supernatural & Divine Knowledge Check; At this point, Cas is a full fledged hunter, even if he may not have the same skill for it as Dean and Sam, but he can handle cases, do his research and investigation and dispatch monsters fine enough on his own. He's dug through the bunker library time and again, so be probably has a lot of that knowledge in the back of his head as well.
∘ Exceptional Willpower; Enough to overpower Satan while being possessed by him, I guess?
∘ Takes A Punch; Castiel's been tortured, killed, mentally scrambled, he's pretty good at enduring some pain.
∘ Torture/Interrogation; Apparently this was his specialty as an angel.
∘ Leadership & Strategist; He's led armies of angels before, and headed the a rebellion.
NEW POWER: Possession! In order to enact this power, Castiel will touch another person’s forehead, like he does to knock someone out in canon, and his eyes will flash this blue color before his consciousness swaps over to the foreign body (there will be OOC permissions for this) and suppresses it - that’s the end goal. For the starting level, I’m going to say either Cas can’t yet get through the whole process, or his power almost makes it and then has trouble suppressing the other consciousness, so maybe he just ends up knocking someone out for a few seconds rather than fully transferring over and taking control of their body? I didn’t want to give him full possession right out of the box, but I’m open to other suggestions if this one doesn’t work.
POWER REASONING: This power is playing off the idea of Castiel not being tied to his ‘vessel’, and the canon rule that Angels and Demons have to possess human bodies to walk on Earth. Angels generally have to have permission before they can possess, so this power is more like demon possession than angel, but it’s still a concept Cas will be familiar with. I wanted to try to keep some aspect of Castiel’s being existing as more than what his physical body is, so I thought this would be a fun way to do that.
